The Price of Fashion
Do you like fashion? I love it. Before I leave the house, I always think about what clothes I should wear for the occasion. Whether I'm meeting some friends at a aéor going out to dinner with my family, I always want to look by best! There's just one problem though. The cost of fashion isn't cheap. I'm not talking about the price tags of new clothes hanging on the racks. I mean there's a huge price that the environment must pay when old clothes are thrown away and pile up in landfills.
?
?
When researching the topic for a class project recently, I learned that more than 80% of clothes go straight into landfills every year. I also found out that washing some types of clothes adds microplastics into the ocean. This doesn't just harm sea life, but it also affects the health of humans as well. Worst of all, the fashion and clothing industries make up 10% of all carbon emissions by humans. Learning these scary facts created a huge dilemma for me since I want to stay on top of current fashion trends, but I also want to do my part to save the environment.

Then I found a ray of hope in an idea called "ethical fashion." Ethical fashion is an idea that aims to solve several problems found in the fashion and apparel industries. One of its goals is to create a fashion industry that is carbon neutral, meaning it doesn't add excessive carbon dioxide into the environment. Ethical fashion is also concerned with equality for all humans and the fair treatment of animals.

I was surprised to learn that the Ethical Fashion Forum was established in 2006 and that more than 100 countries and organizations have joined. They are working to reduce the impact of the fashion industry on the environment and raise awareness in the fashion industry. There are even some Japanese clothing companies supporting this movement. One of these companies makes clothes from recycled PET bottles!

After learning about the sad effects of the fashion industry on the environment and the hopeful potential to make a change with ethical fashion, I decided that I must also do my part to make ethical fashion decisions and help make a change.

The first thing I did was decided to support more companies that promote ethical fashion. I bought some outfits made by that company in Japan making clothes from recycled PET bottles. To be completely honest, they are so comfortable that I prefer their fabric to other brands. And when I wear them, I feel even better since I know that they didn't cause harm to the environment.

Supporting companies in the Ethical Fashion Forum is one way that we can all make a huge impact fighting climate change with small steps. If more and more consumers choose ethical fashion companies over traditional companies, the cost of environmentally friendly clothing will continue to drop. But even if you don't buy these kinds of clothes, there are still steps you can take.

The easiest solution for anyone is to recycle old clothes. It's a great way to extend the life of clothes and give them a chance to find a new owner who will love and cherish them as much as you used to. As you can see, there are many easy ways that we can help change the fashion industry to be more ecologically friendly.
?
?
We all must spread the word and increase awareness about the damaging effects that uninformed fashion choices can have on future generations. By simply talking about the issue as I am today, we can quickly inform people to think twice about the fashion choices they make. So, let's roll up our sleeves and save the planet together by sharing the benefits of ethical fashion with everyone we can.

Thank you.
