Learn English While Making This One-Of-A-Kind ESL Cookie Recipe
Make Your Next English Lesson a Blast with the ESL Cookie Recipe
Do you need a great idea for your next ESL lesson? Why not try making this ESL cookie recipe with your students in class? We tried out this ESL cookie recipe for a special lesson at our English school in Japan, Step by Step English School, and it was a huge success.
It’s not only tons of fun, but it’s also a great lesson to teach vocabulary related to cookie ingredients and baking. It’s also a good chance to talk about many different kinds of cookies that are popular around the world, even bacon cookies!
For this lesson, we prepared a slideshow with different kinds of cookies. After that we practiced how to say the different ingredients in English. We also sang our original song, I’m So Hungry, from the BINGOBONGO Rock Volume 2 CD. It’s a great song to sing about food such as fruit, main courses, desserts, and of course, cookies!

A New Approach to Making Cookies
Let’s Mix Things Up a Bit
Traditionally, everything gets mixed together when you make cookies. You put the chocolate chips, the oatmeal, or the nuts in the dough, mix and bake. For this special ESL cookie recipe, however, we decided to take a new approach. The students worked together to make the plain cookie dough, and then each student chose their own toppings. We had M&Ms, chocolate chips, walnuts and bacon! The students could choose just one topping or any combination of toppings. The possibilities are endless.
The recipe we came up with makes 16 cookies. We thought that two cookies per student would be a good amount, so this recipe is good for up to 8 students. Feel free to adjust the number of cookies or size of cookies for your class. It’s very easy to find the ingredients to make these cookies, but having access to an oven is necessary.
A Sample Lesson Plan For Making One of a Kind ESL Cookies
We did this lesson as a special 2-hour English class, but you could make it shorter or turn it into a series of lessons. Our lesson plan went as follows: first we did the slideshows, practiced words, and sang “I’m So Hungry.” After that each student got one paper plate and wrote their name on it. Each student then put a piece of oven-safe baking paper (2 x 4 inches/ 5 x 10 cm) on the plate. The students then made the cookie dough and put their two scoops of cookie dough on their baking paper. This made it easy to keep track of each student’s cookies and simplified the baking process.
When the students make the cookie dough, it’s a good opportunity to practice using English expressions such as, “I need sugar,” “I want to crack the egg,” “Can I try, please,” etc. There are many ways to get your students to use English for this lesson, so be creative. After the students have gathered all the ingredients from the teacher, they can make the cookies. Students then ask for the toppings they want and decorate the cookies. Once everyone has finished decorating their cookies the teacher can put them in the oven and bake.
Finally, after the cookies have cooled down a little, it’s time to dig in and eat! Don’t forget the milk.
